Computing

Introduction

Computing is concerned with how computers and computer systems work, how they are designed and programmed.  We also teach students how to apply computational thinking.  Computer Science is a practical subject, where invention and resourcefulness are encouraged.

Computing is made of three strands:

  • Computer Science
  • Information Technology
  • Digital Literacy

Each strand is essential in preparing students to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

Year 7

Students spend two hours a fortnight to develop Computing skills by completing half-termly projects on:

  • E-Safety, security and Ethics

  • Programming - Scratch (a block based programming language)

  • Understanding computers – Hardware and Software

  • How data is represented in Computers

    Programming - BBC Micro: Bit and Python (a text based programming language)

Year 8

Students spend two hours a fortnight to develop Computing skills by completing half-termly projects on:

  • Ethical, environmental and legal issues
  • Technical aspects of computers
  • Computational Thinking
  • Programming - Python

Year 9

Students spend two hours a fortnight to develop Computing skills by completing half-termly projects on:

  • Programming – Python and Algorithms
  • Binary
  • Hardware and Software
  • Storage
  • Programming Project

The skills learnt in Key Stage 3 help prepare students who are considering taking Computing as a GCSE option in Key Stage 4.

Year 10

GCSE Computer Science OCR J276 (9-1)

Course Specification

This course gives students a real, in-depth understanding of how computer technology works.

It offers an insight into what goes on ‘behind the scenes’, including computer programming, which many students find absorbing.

It is a great way to develop critical thinking, analysis and problem-solving skills, which can be transferred to further learning and to everyday life.

Topics Covered:
  • An understanding of current and emerging technologies and how they work
  • The development and use of algorithms in computer programs
  • The development of creative and technical skills, knowledge and understanding of computing in a range of contexts
  • The development of computer programs to solve problems
  • Creation of a coded solution which is fully annotated to explain its function
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of computer programs/solutions
  • The impact of computer technology in society.

Assessment:
  • Computer systems: Written Exam- 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Computational thinking, algorithms and programming: Written Exam- 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Programming Project: Controlled assessment (20 hours)

Year 11

Students continue studying their GCSE Computing course which was chosen at the end of Year 9.

Examinations are taken towards the end of this year.
